What Is The Najdorf Variation?
5...a6 takes b5 from White's pieces. Without it, ...e5 allows Nb5 and a knight on d6. With a6 in, you hit the centre with ...e5 or ...e6 on your own terms and gain the ...b5 break. a6 is no waiting move, it is what makes the system work.
After ...e5 the d6 pawn is backward and d5 is a hole, so White's play runs through that square: Bxf6 and Nd5. You accept that for the dark squares and a fast queenside. Najdorf games are decided by speed, not material. In the English Attack, 6.Be3, White castles long and storms with f3 and g4 while you race with ...b5-b4; the Poisoned Pawn, 6.Bg5 e6 7.f4 Qb6, has Black grab b2 and defend precisely for the extra pawn.
