Sicilian Defense: Kan Variation

Kan Variation
1.2.3.4.

What Is The Kan Variation?

4...a6 is prophylaxis, not a waiting move. It takes b5 away from White's knight and bishop, so the d4 knight has no jump into your position and your queenside expansion with ...b5 and ...Bb7 arrives with tempo. By leaving both knights at home you keep the setup flexible: ...Qc7, ...Nf6 and ...Bb4 hit e4, while ...d6 and ...b6 build the hedgehog.

White's most testing reply, 5.c4, sets the Maroczy Bind: pawns on c4 and e4 deny you d5 and hand White space. Games are decided by the d5 square: achieve the ...d5 break and your flexible pieces come alive, never achieve it and White's space squeezes you off the board. Against 5.Bd3, answer with ...Bc5, hitting d4, or ...Nf6 and a quick ...d5, punishing the bishop's early commitment.
