How Does The Chess.com To FIDE/Elo Calculator Work?
Similar to our FIDE to Chess.com Rating Calculator, this one is basically a simple converter working with a formula, derived from a regression analysis of publicly available FIDE and Chess.com ratings data. In this case however, we simply reversed the quadratic function to guarantee equal results, whether you convert from Chess.com ratings to FIDE or the other way around.
Basically, the formula tries to find the best fit line that minimizes the error between the actual and predicted ratings.
Limitations of the Chess.com to FIDE Converter
Both FIDE and Chess.com ratings use a mathematical formula to determine a ranking, basically a numerical value to gauge a player’s skill level. However, there are some differences between FIDE and Chess.com ratings, such as:
- The rating pools: FIDE ratings are based on a global pool of players who participate in official tournaments, while Chess.com ratings are based on an online pool of players who play on the website.
- The rating ranges: FIDE ratings range from 1000 to 2800+, while Chess.com ratings range from 100 to ~3000.
- The rating inflation: FIDE ratings tend to be more stable and consistent over time, while Chess.com ratings tend to be more inflated and variable due to factors such as different time controls, cheating, provisional ratings, etc.
These differences mean that FIDE and Chess.com ratings are not directly comparable. However, this Chess.com to FIDE rating calculator can roughly estimate the equivalent FIDE rating for a given Chess.com rating, based on a formula derived from a regression analysis of publicly available data.
