What Is The Delayed Alapin Variation?
White plays Nf3 before c3, so Black never gets the standard Alapin counter 2...Nf6 hitting the e4 pawn. The c3 pawn supports d4 and builds a broad centre. Black strikes with 3...d5, and after 4.exd5 Qxd5 that same pawn on c3 blocks the square White's knight wants, so the queen stands on d5 unchased. Treat her as well placed, not loose, and develop with ...Nc6, ...Be7 and ...O-O.
After 5.d4 Nf6 the structure decides everything. Black exchanges on d4, White recaptures with the c-pawn, and an isolated queen's pawn appears. That pawn hands White space, the e5 square and open lines, then becomes a weakness once pieces come off. White attacks with Bd3, Ne5 and the d4-d5 break; Black blockades d5, trades minor pieces and heads for the endgame.
