White reaches an Alapin a move later, and 2...e6 shuts in the c8 bishop before the centre opens. The c3 pawn supports d4 and builds a broad centre. Black strikes with 3...d5, and after 4.exd5 Qxd5 that same pawn on c3 blocks the square White's knight wants, so the queen stands on d5 unchased. Treat her as well placed, not loose, and develop with ...Nc6, ...Be7 and ...O-O.

After 5.d4 Nf6 the structure decides everything. Black exchanges on d4, White recaptures with the c-pawn, and an isolated queen's pawn appears. That pawn hands White space, the e5 square and open lines, then becomes a weakness once pieces come off. White attacks with Bd3, Ne5 and the d4-d5 break; Black blockades d5, trades minor pieces and heads for the endgame.

The sample here is small, so treat the exact split carefully: 36% play 6.Be2, with 6.Be3 and 6.Na3 behind it. White has reached an Alapin structure through a move order that dodges the sharpest answers to 2.c3, which is the whole idea.

A delayed system buys its safety with the tempo that made the original dangerous, so natural development equalises on its own here. There is no attack coming and no gambit to decline. Get the pieces out, castle, and work toward the ...d5 break every Alapin structure eventually invites. If you already know the ordinary Alapin plans you know these too, because the pawn structures converge as soon as both sides finish developing.
