English Opening: Symmetrical Variation

What Is The Symmetrical Variation?

The Symmetrical Variation starts with 1.c4 c5: Black mirrors White and claims d4 exactly as White claims d5. Everything that follows is a fight over who breaks the symmetry, and when. White aims to push d4 while the extra tempo still counts; Black develops behind the pawn and punishes a hasty break with pressure down the half-open c-file.

Copying moves does not equalize: the mirror holds only until the central break, and the side that times d4 or ...d5 correctly takes over. Both sides fianchetto the king's bishop, and Black sets up a Hedgehog with pawns on a6, b6, d6 and e6, waiting to hit back with ...b5 or ...d5. Games are won by that break and the endgame it leaves behind, so patience scores, not aggression.
