What Is The Anglo-Indian Defense?

The Anglo-Indian Defense begins with 1.c4 Nf6, the most flexible reply to the English. Black commits no pawn, keeping King's Indian, Queen's Indian, Grünfeld and Hedgehog setups available, while White chooses between playing d4 to transpose into a mainline or holding it back for pure English positions. The real fight is over transpositions: each side maneuvers toward the structure it knows better.

Delaying d4 gives White a concrete edge against a Grünfeld setup: after ...d5, White exchanges on d5 and denies Black the d4 target that fuels the counterattack. White's plan is to fianchetto the king's bishop, clamp down on d5, and play d4 only on favorable terms. As Black, pick one formation, learn its pawn break, ...e5, ...d5 or ...b6 into a Hedgehog, and steer every game there.
