What Is The Agincourt Defense?
The Agincourt Defense is Black's most flexible reply to the English: 1...e6 prepares ...d5 without committing the knight or the c pawn. Black's point is transpositional: after ...d5, White chooses between a Queen's Gambit with d4 and a Neo-Catalan with g3, and Black keeps a comfortable setup against both. 1...e6 is less a variation than a fork in the road, and the player who understands the transpositions better wins the opening battle.
White's main plan is g3 and Bg2, pressuring d5 on the long diagonal while holding back d4. Black plays ...d5, ...Nf6 and ...Be7, then picks the moment for ...dxc4 or ...c5. Capture on c4 at the right time and Black equalizes; cling to the center too long and the Catalan bishop takes over.
