Lasker built 5...Ne4 to solve the Queen's Gambit Declined's oldest problem: Black has less space and a buried c8 bishop, so he trades pieces until neither matters. The knight forces the exchange of dark-squared bishops on e7, then swaps itself on c3, and half the minor pieces leave the board by move ten. Simplification is not a draw offer here, it is the point: with two sets of minors gone, Black's position stops being cramped.

White recaptures with bxc3, presses down the half-open b-file after cxd5 exd5, and aims the c3-c4 break at Black's d5 pawn. Your game as Black hangs on the ...c5 break: play it in time and you equalize, delay it and White squeezes a one-sided endgame. Learn that timing before anything else.
