What Is The Exchange Variation?

Capturing on d5 is not a peace offer. After ...exd5 the pawn structure freezes into the Carlsbad: White's pawns on d4 and e3 face Black's on d5 and c6, and White gets a ready-made plan, the minority attack. Rb1, b4, b5 and the exchange on c6 leave Black a backward c-pawn on a half-open file, an endgame target that wins games fifty moves later.

Black's compensation is concrete: the exchange frees the c8 bishop and hands Black the kingside, where ...Ne4, ...f5 and a rook lift create real mating chances. Games in the Exchange QGD are decided by speed: White's queenside break races Black's kingside attack, and the slower player defends. Know both plans before you enter it, because the structure forgives nothing.

You are Black, and 73% recapture with 4...exd5 while 23% prefer 4...Nxd5. The pawn recapture is nearly always right, and understanding why is worth more than any line: it keeps a pawn on d5 and blocks the diagonal White wants.

The Exchange Variation hands White the minority attack, so your counterplay has to come in the centre or on the kingside before b4 and b5 arrive. Play ...c6, ...Be7 and ...Ne4, and look for ...f5 to take space where White is not operating. Sitting still and defending the queenside is how these games are slowly lost. White scores 50% to 44% over 1,130 games.
