Four Knights Game: Spanish Variation

What Is The Spanish Variation?

The Spanish Variation plants the Ruy Lopez bishop on b5 with all four knights already developed, and its ambition is modest: castle, play d3, and squeeze e5 in a slow maneuvering game. Black's classical answer is the symmetrical 4...Bb4, and White breaks the mirror with Nd5 or Bxc6, doubling Black's c-pawns and steering into a long positional grind.

Rubinstein's 4...Nd4 is the famous point of this line: Black offers the e5 pawn, and taking it concedes open files and effortless equality. That single move pushed the variation out of elite play, yet below master level most opponents answer 4...Bb4 and the fight is real. There, games are decided by control of d5, the timing of the f4 break, and who handles the doubled c-pawns with more patience.
