The Halloween Gambit hands over a full knight for a single pawn: 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 launches White's center pawns straight at Black's knights. After 5...Ng6 6.e5 the knight on f6 is driven back to g8 as well, and White gains the entire center along with a big lead in time. You play this for shock value and initiative, not for the objective evaluation.

Black's antidote is to strike at the center rather than hoard material: after 6...Ng8 7.Bc4 d5 8.Bxd5 c6 9.Bb3, giving a pawn back frees the pieces and leaves Black clearly better. Sit still and the pawns roll over you. Games here are decided by preparation: the defender who knows when to return material consolidates and wins, and the one who only grabs gets flattened.

93% recapture with 4...Nxe5, and taking is right. White has given a knight for two pawns and a big centre, which is not enough, and the entire gambit is a bet that you will panic in an unfamiliar position rather than that the sacrifice is sound.

Take the piece, give one pawn back to finish developing, and the extra material decides the game. After 4...Nxe5 5.d4 the knight must retreat to c6 or g6, and ...Ng6 is the safer square. Then play ...Bb4 and castle rather than trying to hold everything. Do not return the whole piece out of nervousness. White scores 51% to 45% over 239 games, which says more about surprise value than about soundness.
