Four Knights Game: Halloween Gambit
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5
What Is The Halloween Gambit?
The Halloween Gambit hands over a full knight for a single pawn: 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 launches White's center pawns straight at Black's knights. After 5...Ng6 6.e5 both knights get chased back toward their starting squares, and White claims the entire center plus a serious lead in development. You play this for shock value and initiative, not for the objective evaluation.
Black refutes it by giving material back, not by clinging to it: a well timed ...d6 or ...d5 returns the knight, breaks the pawn chain, and leaves Black a clean pawn up with the safer king. Retreat both knights to the back rank instead and the avalanche buries you. Games in the Halloween Gambit are decided by preparation: defenders who know to return the piece win, and defenders who hoard it get flattened.
