What Is The Meran Variation?
7...b5 is the move that separates the Meran from the rest of the Semi-Slav. Black captures on c4 first so the bishop must recapture, then gains a tempo on it with ...b5 and follows up with ...a6 and ...c5. That queenside pawn mass strikes at d4 and frees the c8 bishop, the piece that suffocates in every other Semi-Slav line.
White answers Bd3 and plays for e3-e4-e5, so the game becomes a race: White's central advance against your ...c5 break. Because your king sits in the centre while both sides push, White sacrifices a piece on b5 to tear open the queenside before you castle. Take the material and defend precisely: it counts only if you survive the next ten moves.
