What Is The Fianchetto?

The fianchetto only makes sense with the queen behind it. After 4.d5 the centre locks into a Benoni, and 4...Qa5 attacks the knight on c3 a second time, since the bishop on g7 already stares down the long diagonal. With d2 empty, that knight is pinned to the king on e1, so White has to block with Bd2 or Qd2 before advancing e4.

Bxc3+ costs you the bishop you just fianchettoed, so trade only when the doubled c-pawns matter more than the dark squares you concede. Otherwise develop with ...d6, ...Nf6 and castling, and treat it as a Benoni with the queen already active for the ...b5 break. White meets it with e4, Nf3 and a4. The race between that break and White's central advance decides the game.
