What Is The Lion Variation?

4...Nbd7 defends e5 a second time, so you never have to release the centre with ...exd4. The pawn stays on e5, the c-pawn stays free for ...c6, and you get the c6, d6, e5 chain that ordinary Philidor lines surrender. The cost is that the knight on d7 sits passively, blocks the c8 bishop, and leaves f7 guarded by the king alone.

The sharpest try is 5.Bc4, when 5...Be7 6.Ng5 O-O 7.Bxf7+ Rxf7 8.Ne6 hits the queen, and after 8...Qe8 9.Nxc7 forks it and the rook on a8. So insert ...h6 or ...c6 before castling, then finish the regrouping: ...Be7, ...Qc7, ...Re8 and ...Bf8, holding e5 and refusing every exchange. Whoever arrives first, your setup or White's break, wins the game.

40% take with 5.dxe5 and 24% develop with 5.Bc4. Black has built the Lion setup with ...Nbd7 and ...Nf6, a compact formation that gives up the centre and waits for a chance to strike back with ...c6 and ...Qc7.

Cramped setups collapse when the centre opens before they are ready, so trade on e5 or push d5 rather than allowing Black to complete the formation. The alternative is Bc4 aiming at f7 while the king is still in the middle, which works for the same reason it works in the ordinary Philidor. Black scores 53% to 43% over 352 games, one of the few results in this section favouring the defender, so the setup is more resilient than it looks.
