What Is The Fianchetto Variation?
4.g3 prepares Bg2, and that bishop is the whole point: it stares down the long diagonal at Black's Bg7 and guards e4, so White never needs the space-grabbing e4 push that defines the King's Indian elsewhere. The fianchettoed bishop kills the standard King's Indian attack, because White's kingside stays solid and a black pawn storm with ...f5 and ...f4 hits nothing.
So Black switches wings. After ...O-O, ...d6 and ...Nc6, the Panno meets d5 with ...Na5, then ...c5, ...a6, ...Rb8 and ...b5 to prise open the queenside. The other route is ...c6 and ...d5, hitting the centre before White fixes it. Whoever opens their wing first wins: Black needs ...b5 to land, White needs pressure on d6 and the c file.
