What Is The Closed Variation?
The Closed Catalan with c6 answers White's g3 setup by building a Semi-Slav wall and then striking with 8...b5. That pawn thrust is the whole idea: Black gains queenside space, prepares Bb7 and a later c5, and attacks the c4 pawn before White finishes development. White's odd-looking Qc2 and Nbd2 exist for exactly this moment, keeping c4 defended and holding e4 in reserve.
White answers with a4 to pry at b5 or with e4 to open the centre for the g2 bishop. The game turns on Black's light-squared bishop: force through c5 and develop it to b7 and Black stands equal, stay cramped behind c6 and e6 and White grinds the long diagonal for the full point. Play for the c5 break, not for holding extra space.
