What Is The Panov Attack?

The Panov Attack denies the Caro-Kann its quiet game. With 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4 White challenges d5 at once and takes on an isolated queen's pawn once the tension breaks, usually after cxd5 and ...Nxd5. The whole variation is a bet that the isolated d4 pawn buys White enough open lines and piece activity to strike before an endgame arrives. Knights go to c3 and f3, the bishop to d3 or b5, and d4-d5 is the break that justifies it all.

Black answers the standard way: blockade d5 with a knight, trade minor pieces, and steer toward an ending where the isolani is a target, not a weapon. With queens and four minors on, White's initiative bites; after a few trades the pawn becomes a liability.

Blockade d5 with a knight, avoid loosening moves on the kingside, and remember that reaching an endgame is already a small victory.
