Transparency: How Chessily Reviews Work

Chess is no longer a simple board game played between two players. Today, we have so many different chess products and services, that even enthusiasts find it impossible to know which ones are the best fit for their needs. This is why we founded Chessily Reviews. We want to narrow down the options and provide recommendations based on the needs and preferences of you, the chess player.

Of course, you have to be able to trust Chessily Reviews. This is why we want to be as transparent as possible when it comes to how we test and review products, as well as how we finance our reviews.

Our Ethical Codex In Short

Trust in Chessily Reviews begins with understanding how we review products and services. At Chessily, our main priority is maintaining integrity, honesty and objectivity of our reviews. To ensure you can trust our reviews 100%, we have implemented the following practices:

  1. We do not allow any form of direct compensation in exchange for (positive) reviews.
  2. We actually use the products or services we review.
  3. We regularly monitor, fact-check and update our reviews to ensure that they are up-to-date.

However, in some cases we include affiliate links in a given review. If you decide to purchase a product using our affiliate link, we will receive a small commission in return. This will help us keep the servers running and make better content for you. All affiliate links are marked with the following symbol: ‘*’.

By adhering to these practices, we strive to provide our readers with honest and unbiased reviews that they can trust. If you have any questions, feedback or just want to talk, feel free to reach out at [email protected]!

Chessily Review Score

To make all reviews as comparable as possible, we created the Chessily Review Score.Β

Chessily Review Score:Β Sample

  • User Expierence: 5/5
  • Value For Money: 5/5
  • Community Reviews: 5/5

User Experience

User Experience is the result of how we feel while using the product.

  • For a chess set, this might be size, quality and colors.
  • For a chess website this might be the features, functionality and the user interface.
  • For a chess clock this might be usability and durability.

You get the idea. Essentially, a product that is fun to use and serves its intended purpose will get a better User Experience score.

Value For Money

This category is oretty self-explanatory: how much bang do you get for your buck? A completely free product will almost always get a 5/5 rating.

Important: If a chess website has both a free and a paid version, the Value For Money score will always be based on the premium version!

Community Reviews

Last but not least, we look online to compare our findings with that of the chess community. We try to aggregate a general consensus on how well a product is perceived online.

The Community score might sometimes differ significantly from our personal User Experience score, as user sentiment might be influenced by outside factors (for example shady business practices), which we don’t include in our User Experience score. But of course, we would voice such concerns in the written review anyway!

How We Make Money

It is no surprise that running a website can get quite expensive. This is especially true when we have to buy certain products or services to review them. To make Chessily Reviews as transparent as somehow possible, we want to explain in detail how we make money.

In our reviews, you will sometimes (when available) find so-called affiliate links. These links point towards the reviewed product or service with a unique tracking ID, that allows the vendor to see, that Chessily.com sent you to them. In case you decide to purchase the product, we receive a small commission from the vendor (at no additional cost to you!).

This is in stark contrast to sponsored or bought reviews, in which a company directly compensated a publisher in return for a (positive) review. We do not receive any form of direct payment for any review you will find on our site.Β Meaning, we have complete freedom about what we say. This is the foundation of an unbiased review.

Of course, we also review chess websites that are free to use (Lichess for example), in which we do not receive any form of compensation at all.

Community Effort

We want Chessily Reviews to be a community project.Β If you have any thoughts on a given review, please reach out to us at [email protected]!
